ACR’s were killer SCCA Class C cars. Beyond hub issues with sticky tires, they were generally pretty cheap to abuse on a track.

They really are cute, pretty reliable, and according to a friend of mine who was running SCCA ITA-class during the ‘90s, they really gave the Miatas hell.
Of course, it didn’t hurt that Chrysler was actually offering decent money to teams that won with Neons, while Mazda only offered parts discounts at the time.

I always liked them, a ‘96 was almost my first car, I really want to run one in LeMons.

My friend had a ‘98 Neon and she didn’t change the oil for six years (got the car when she was 16 and we changed its oil for the first time when she was just shy of turning 22).. It still ran and only burned a little bit of oil. When we changed it (finally), about two quarts came out and it looked like mud. It still runs to this day.

Also lends itself well to some Twingo-style Photoshop editing courtesy of Oppo’s own Dr Dick Saplenti.

‘Twas intentionally designed that way. Part of their whole marketing campaign was that economy cars no longer needed to be penalty boxes.

My first manual car was a '98 DOHC Sport. Maybe it was just the fun of shifting and the curvy roads, but I remember it being pretty quick and fun to drive. Plus I got almost 40 MPGs on longer trips.

Hardly ever seeing them on the road.

They were decent little cars for the time. Not as good as a Civic or Corolla, but they narrowed the gap enough to make you think Chrysler was starting to get serious about maybe one day closing it entirely. And they might have, too, if Daimler hadn’t come into the picture.
